This piece is the result of a research started in the town of Athens with its abandoned neoclassical buildings. I questioned myself about the need of conserving our artifacts, objects, artworks, in order to consolidate identity and history against the human condition of mortality.

The aim of this work is getting through the surface and the boundaries of visibility to acquire a deeper understanding of reality.

Reading the articles about the prevention and conservation of human artifacts, it is remarkable how the language humanizes the objects, which suffer from bacterial damage. Words like loss, treatment, decay, deterioration, are recurrent.

Covering-Recovering is about the relationship between human being and time and preservation of human marks. 

The Recovering video shows the procedure through which the art restorer can see the different layers of paint under the surface wall; in this case the procedure is applied on a street graffiti.

On the other side, the Covering video highlights the invisible presence of microbial communities in the ecosystem of the artwork, as the main cause of its biodeterioration. 

In the Conservation field, the term biodeterioration, underlines the negative aspect of the natural process of biodegradability, which mankind tries to control to ensure the survival of his cultural heritage.

The filtered reading shifts the reflection to nature preservation and the need to reduce the human activities provoking the decline of the planet.

Cette vidéo est le résultat d’une recherche qui a commencé cdans la ville d’Athènes avec ses bâtiments néoclassiques abandonnés. Je me suis interrogée sur la nécessité de conserver nos artefacts, objets, œuvres d’art, afin de consolider l’identité et l’histoire d’un pays. 

L’objectif de ce travail est de franchir la surface et les limites de la visibilité pour acquérir une meilleure compréhension de la réalité. En lisant les articles sur la prévention et la conservation des oeuvres d’art, il est remarquable de voir comment le langage humanise les objets qui souffrent de dommages bactériens. Des mots comme perte, traitement, détérioration, délabrement, sont récurrents.

Covering-Recovering explore la relation entre l’être humain, le temps et la préservation des traces humaines.

La vidéo intitulée Recovering montre le processus utilisé par le restaurateur afin de voir les différents couches  de peinture dans la surface du mur; dans ce cas l’opération est effectuée sur un graffiti.

Dans la vidéo Covering, l’effacement de certaines parties d’un article scientifique, met en évidence la présence invisible des communautés microbiennes qui vivent dans l’echosystème de l’oeuvre d’art. Ces microorganismes sont responsable de sa déterioration.

Dans le domaine de la conservation, le terme de  biodeterioration souligne l’aspect négatif du processus naturel de la biodégradabilité, que l’être humain essaye de controler pour assurer la survie de son heritage culturel. La selection du texte déplace la réflexion sur la preservation de la nature et le besoin de reduire l’activité humaine qui provoque le déclin de la planète.
